The year in books: February
Joining in with Laura, here is my book choice for February.
I've gone with The Sea, The Sea by Iris Murdoch. I know I said I was going to use this challenge to encourage myself to read books I already own (and some of the books I own have been in my possession for a long time) but I was in the library the other day, looking for another book entirely, when I saw this and just decided to read it. I haven't read many classic books recently, so this could be a good change. I'm currently about four pages into it, and so far so good.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about 'The Sea, The Sea' as Iris Murdock is one of those authors I should have read but haven't.
ReplyDeleteI'm also trying to make my way through what we have on the bookshelves so I'm not going to buy any new books, unless they are from charity shops.
I try so hard to read books I already have, but sometimes books just call to me from elsewhere! I'm about 15pgs in, so far, so good!
DeleteI am joining in with Laura's book group. I read The Sea The Sea many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a big Iris Murdoch fan.

I'm enjoying it so far, it's easier to read than I expected, I think I sometimes have this inaccurate idea that 'classic' books are going to be hard to read. I think this book is going to turn into one I wish I'd read sooner!
DeleteGreat idea to read books you already own - I'm doing the same, or at least trying to! The pile is very high... I look forward to hearing what you have to say about the Iris Murdoch.
ReplyDeleteI have books in different places throughout the flat, so it doesn't look as though I have quite so many. And all the books on my Kindle can't be seen anyway! I'm hoping to clear quite a bit of space by the end of the year, though, fingers crossed!
DeleteI have never read Iris Murdoch and I am looking forward to read your thoughts about your choice. I shy away from Classics, probably because my Literature teacher was so awful but this might be the year I give it a go.
ReplyDeleteWe have so many books in the house that I haven't read.... I should do what you do but I can't resist to buy yet another one.
I try to read a classic book for maybe every two or three more modern books. But there are just so many things I want to read! I think it's good to read the classics, there are so many cultural references to them that I think it's important to have a general knowledge of them. I completely agree though, teachers can really influence how you feel about something in later life.
DeleteGreat to see you joining in! Both your Jan and Feb reads sound very interesting. I'm unsure whether to resist the urge to add them to my To Read list. Nope, I couldn't!

My 'to read' list in my head is growing ever longer...really ought to be productive and add them to my Goodreads list, and then I might be able to remember them all!
DeleteOh, I loved The Sea, The Sea. I went through a massive Murdoch phase a while back. Brilliant, and what a lovely cover on your edition! x
ReplyDeleteI do like attractive covers! According to the inside of the jacket, Vintage Classics asked seven designers featured in the V&A's exhibition 'British Design 1948-2012' to 'rethink the cover art for a selection of the most unforgettable, ground-breaking and life-changing British novels of the last seven decades'. This cover was designed by Zandra Rhodes.
