The sock knitting continues

Back in March, I posted about how I had (just about) mastered knitting socks.  I had a whole pair of socks, that fitted me.

I also had more sock yarn stashed away.  Time for more socks!

These socks were knitted using Drops Fabel.  I tried to get the colours to match, and I thought I had, then I realised that ball two had been wound the opposite way to ball one, so the colours were repeating in a backwards order.  It didn't bother me enough to take it back so I carried on.  I'm wearing them now and they are lovely and soft and warm.

Next I progressed on to the Good Wool, the more expensive stuff.  This was from LaalBear whose Etsy shop was closing down so I got two 100g skeins for about £9 each rather than the £13 or so they were originally.  I did try to match the first pair, when I'd knitted the first sock I rewound the ball of wool to see if the yellow zigzag pattern bit (technical) would go the other way, but it didn't.  It's out by about 20 stitches which is more annoying than the pair above, but still not enough to make me start again.  These socks are for me and are to be worn in bed.  This week has been cold, I've gone from taking a blanket off the bed to putting it firmly back on (and adding a hot water bottle, seriously, it's now May!) and these socks will be a lovely addition to my winter (ha!) nighttime attire.

I bought a skein of LaalBear wool for my mum, as she can knit and has in the past knitted lots of socks for me.  Her (gorgeous) cats make knitting problematic, though, so she posted the wool back to me and I knitted it into socks for her (now that I have mastered precisely two sock patterns).  They went in the post today so I hope she likes them.  I asked for her foot measurements which are almost exactly the same as mine - these socks fit me so they should fit her too!

I am now out of sock wool.  Well, out of sock wool I can use - my birthday is this month and I know Ben has ordered some sock wool for me.  It arrived the other day and I texted a friend getting all excited that 300g of sock wool had arrived.  She asked me how I knew it was 300g of sock yarn, I replied saying I could feel the skeins through the plastic packaging and the sockyarnshop.com on the address label was a big clue!  Ben now knows just how much good, posh wool costs (well, you get what you pay for with yarn and wool) and I have a few weeks to find some more patterns as I think I'm ready for the next sock challenge.  In the meantime, I shall sit back and admire my warm, toasty feet, wearing socks I made all by myself.

  2. Wow, you have been very busy! I'm glad there is another sock knitter in our yarny world now.

Like you, the cold spell surprised me and I have taken a hat and gloves back out of summer storage. I may even have to get out some socks.

    1. I am a complete sock convert! It feels very satisfying to be able to knit something useful and beautiful. Hot water bottle in bed last night, the days seem very sunny but the nights are still quite cold!

  3. I love the colours in the second pair. How easy is it to adjust for different sized feet?

    1. The standard pattern appears to have 60 stitches, which generally fits UK size 5-7 feet. Mine are a 7-8 and wide, so I tend to use 72sts and adjust the pattern accordingly. Toe up socks are much better if you're trying to adjust the size as you can try them on as you go and so ensure they fit perfectly. I don't like long socks, so don't knit them much higher than my ankle. Hope that helps!
