Crocheting a sky blanket - the first quarter

Back in January I wrote about my plan to crochet a sky blanket consisting of one 4-round granny square for each day of the year, in a colour representing the colour of the sky that day at noon.

Here is the blanket on the edge of my bed at the end of January, starting in the top left hand corner then working diagonally:

I have to say, I am loving this blanket.  I love how the colours go together in a random way, ending up with clusters of white or blue or yellow.  Each square takes just a few minutes to make, I'm joining as I go and even being quite prompt at sewing the ends in (having learned the lesson from my recent scarf).

I failed to take a photo at the end of February as I had a few days to catch up with and kept going into March, forgetting that February only has 28 days in.  Whoops.

Here is how it looks today, 31st March:

I am so looking forward to seeing how this grows over the rest of the year!  I've got a brighter yellow to use for summer sun, which I think I'll count as being in June, July and August.  So hopefully the next quarterly installment will contain some bright yellow!

On Twitter I read about a 9 year old girl in Seattle who made a weather scarf, knitting a row per day based on the temperature, so blues and pinks.  It's beautiful!  I'm not sure I'd want to make a scarf, or indeed another blanket just yet, but if I did, I think temperature would be a lovely option.  Something else to put on the to do list!

    1. Do it! So simple and straightforward and looks really good! I make a note of the colour of the sky and then do three or four squares in a row when I have the time to catch up.

I look forward to seeing your completed blanket. Having a visual representation of such a long period of time will be interesting.

    1. Not that I need many more king size blankets, but I would quite like to make more and then compare! Maybe in a decade or so...

    1. Thank you! I love the temperature scarf too. Both go to show that the weather isn't as bad as we often think it is!

  5. Beautiful - it's one of the reasons I wish I could knit or crochet, as I think sky blankets are such a brilliant idea (and I especially love your use of yellow in this one).

    1. Thank you! I really do like it. If I needed that many blankets, I'd be tempted to make one every year. Crocheting is easy to learn, I can email a few helpful links?

    1. I can't take any credit for the idea - I saw quite a few on the internet over the last couple of years and decided in December that I was going to do one in 2015!

    1. Thank you! If I can't make a square a day I just make a note of the colour I would do and crochet them when I get the opportunity.
