Day Zero Project - 101 in 1001

Happy New Year!

For a while now, I've seen blog posts about people's Day Zero Projects - the aim is to write a list of 101 things you'd like to do in the next 1001 days.  They have to be specific and measurable (so 'read more' would need to be more detailed) and the idea behind the amount of time (just over 2.5 years) means that most things should be achievable.  Skills can be learned and improved upon, money can be saved for trips, plans can be made and put into action.

I've decided to start today, 3rd January, meaning I finish on 30 September 2017.

I've written my list up as a separate page - it's in the sidebar.  Most of the goals are self-explanatory, they're not in order of importance and it actually took me quite a while to come up with them!  Some activities I've done before and want to do again, some are skills I already have and want to develop, some are skills I want to acquire, and other things I want to do simply because I want to do them.

I thought in vague categories, so there are a lot of food-based things, a lot of craft-based things, a lot of places I want to visit.  There are things which I should be able to do just the once (milk a cow) and other things which are more ongoing (crochet a sky blanket, with a different coloured square to represent the sky for each day of a year).  Some should be free (read my unread books) whilst others will be more expensive (go on a weekend break with Mum).  Some I will do all by myself (start a new address book) and others require lots of people (attend a large-scale residential event for Brownies).

A lot of the items are about using my possessions - why do I have recipe books if I don't use them?  Why do I have all this kitchen equipment if I never use it?  How many cupcake cases do I really need?  It's not just about physical items, either - by Christmas Day lunch, when I checked my phone, I had 57 emails from companies advertising their post-Christmas sales.  I really do not need that many emails.  I want to regularly sort through my emails so I don't waste my time deleting so much junk.

Over Christmas, my Mum showed me photos of cats sitting in circles.  Apparently, if you make a circle on the floor, out of tape or string, or just using a round flat object (like a chocolate box lid) a cat will go and sit in it, as the circle makes them feel safe.  The photos were very cute, and so I tried it on Mum's two cats, Treacle and Sponge.  We made a circle on the floor out of string, and left it there all day.  The cats were completely oblivious: Treacle walked straight through it whilst Sponge slept on the armchair.  All day this circle was there.  Eventually, Treacle poked it with her paw and then started eating the string, thus destroying the circle, but they never sat in it like the cats on the internet. I am now on the hunt for a cat that I can trap in a circle.  This is a good use of my time.

I'll be updating the page sporadically with my progress - in the mean time, I had best get going!  I'm also quite nosy (although I prefer 'inquisitive') so please let me know if you're doing something similar!

  1. What a lovely list of things to do! It's fun to have such a guiding list to encourage you to do the things you really want to do.

Best of luck! Will you be posting progress reports along the way?

    1. Yes, I'll post updates every now and again, no idea how often as that will depend on what I achieve! Plan for today is going through my recipe books, I have an entire shelf full but sitting here now I can't remember what half of them are which sort of implies I'm not too bothered about cooking anything from them..I will go and investigate and do some decluttering. Loved the photo you shared the other day of the minimalist farmhouse!

  2. First off, your calendar is v.cute. Secondly, this is a great project and the time frame makes it particularly tempting... Going to go and have a look at your list :) x

    1. I love the idea behind this project too...a sensible time frame in which a lot can be achieved (hopefully!). The calendar's lovely, it was a thank you present from my last Brownie unit. It's handmade, which is great, but annoyingly the number cubes aren't actually cubes...I have to skip 11-19 as the cubes when showing these dates don't fit in the space! I still love it, though.

  3. I'm excited to follow your progress with this! It'll be nice to see someone else completing the project in a similar time frame as I am!

    1. I've done one already, found my Christmas biscuit cutters, they were in my embroidery bag, of all places. Have organised them a bit better ready to be used this year!

  4. What a great list - I find these small goals so much more achievable than huge, vague resolutions. I made macarons a couple of years ago after going to a class and was pleasantly surprised by how easy they are. The recipe is here http://wordsthatcanonlybeyourown.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/mouthwatering-macaroons.html
