#BEDM - 13th: a lovely conversation from Brownies last night

At Brownies last night we made s'mores.  These are very easy - toast a marshmallow over a tealight (or use a microwave if for some reason you can't find the tealights you are sure were in the cupboard last time you needed them) then sandwich between two chocolate digestive biscuits.  Delicious, sticky, sweet mess.  Tie hair back before you start.  Don't wipe your mouth on your brand new uniform.  Understandably, the Brownies loved making them (we were 'visiting' America as part of our World Traveller badge).  Each girl made a s'more and then had to wash up her plate in the sink full of warm soapy water, then dry it (on both sides! the bottom gets wet too!) and give it back to me.

At the end of the evening I walked to the door with the Brownies, to ensure everyone was going home with the right adult.  I had this conversation with one of the newest, smallest Brownies:

Brownie: Fluffy Owl! Guess what was my favourite bit of Brownies tonight?
Me: Let me guess, was it making s'mores?
Brownie: Nope, but they were good too.
Me: So which bit did you enjoy the most?
Brownie: Washing up! I'm not allowed to wash up at home so I'm excited we can do it here!

And that is why I love Guiding.  Giving girls new opportunities, developing new skills, and seeing how enthusiastic they can be about washing and drying a plate.  It's the little things.

  1. The enthusiasm is amazing. It gives me a new sense of wonder in being an adult. Sometimes I don't understand how they can get excited about such little things, but then it takes me back to a time when I didn't understand the world and alien activities to me, while sometimes scary were also exciting when doing them for the first time. Simple smiles :)

    1. I just hope she continues to be that excited about things as she gets older - enthusiasm is a great thing to have, especially with household chores!

    1. Probably not long enough! Although when we go on our next sleepover I will remind her about this...

  3. That is what I miss about teaching, seeing how exciting and amazing the world is through the eyes of a child. It must be lovely to be a Brownie leader.

    1. I do love it very much. I especially appreciate it when I've had a hard day, I can go to Brownies and listen to them talk about their guinea pigs, or their button collection, or how HARD their homework is as they have to write HALF A SIDE in their exercise books, or join in a game when we need an even number of players and we only have an odd number of girls. Brilliant :-)

  4. Adorable! I love how excited my girls get on camp putting away cutlery, vacuuming, washing up etc. So interesting to see those who have never had those experiences before.

    1. It is amazing how much fun you can make household chores, if only I could have some of that enthusiasm when my flat needs a good vacuum! It is always interesting to see who has done things before and who hasn't, and who has as dishwasher and has never really even seen washing up!
